Let us introduce you to ‘Patience’, our very pretty and sensibly upgraded Triumph TR5.
This vehicle is one of only 1161 TR5’s destined for the UK market. Genuine matching numbers car is a must for these rare vehicles, we can confirm the chassis and engine numbers match the heritage certificate obtained for the vehicle.
The original ‘buff’ logbook is present in the history file. Even though period history for this vehicle is a little sparce, the 2 binders full of receipts for the restoration, the 2 binders of photo’s of the restoration AND the very nice touch of Patience’s own book, detailing the restoration. The restoration was followed by many as the previous owner posted progress on the TR Register websites ‘rebuilders diary’, some 21 chapters kept the register members entertained and interested for the period of the rebuild.
So, onto the rebuild…
1st registered in Devon 1968, this 4 owner vehicle (2 owners at the same address) was purchased by the previous owner in 2013, the strip down commenced. The vehicle was stripped to a bare chassis, every nut & bolt removed etc. The chassis was blasted, replacement trailing arms, breast plate & minor repairs were carried out, the chassis was strengthened at the same time. The chassis was then painted and ‘waxed’ internally. The suspension/steering/brakes were fully rebuilt including upgraded parts including polybushed throughout, hydraulic power steering, CV driveshafts & uprated hubs. The differential was fully rebuilt along with the overdrive gearbox. The engine was built to std specification but with a Newman cam, fully lightened and balanced bottom end, bespoke exhaust manifold & system. The fuel injection system was fully overhauled. High torque starter motor etc….. The list is endless!
The body shell was dipped to find ALL the issues you would expect from a 52 year old TR5. Surprisingly, it was in remarkably good condition, needing the normal floor, sill areas, repairs to the inner wings, door skins etc. The file of the body restoration shows the detailed pictures of the process. Resplendent in it’s Signal red paintwork, inside out and upside down … Wheel arch liners are fitted.
The build up started in 2016 once the body was reunited with it’s rebuilt chassis. Everything on this car was either stripped & rebuilt, new or uprated. The loom was made for the additions, of which there are many! Uprated heater, sound proofed floors etc, alloy ‘large’ fuel tank, Bosch fuel pump with Syston filter, Alloy radiator, electric cooling fan, oil cooler, bespoke fuse box/relay set up… The list is truly remarkable, we won’t even begin to try and list the whole specification down!
The interior is finished in Parchment leather, the dash crash pads being trimmed in the same colour. LED lights are fitted to the dials on the Walnut Burr dashboard. USB ports installed for phone charging/sat nav. ‘Retro’ radio. MX5 style seats are fitted, again trimmed in Parchment. Red inertia reel seatbelts complement the colours, centre armrest is also a nice addition.
The TR5 was treated to new external items where possible/necessary, the bumpers were re-chromed. Driving lights on the front and rear fog light fitted, LED bulbs also fitted, nice to have these sensible, safety related items to allow the vehicle to cope with the modern roads/conditions. Mohair hood is fitted along with a bespoke hood bag again Mohair.
The TR5 was completed in 2017, since then it has covered just over 3000 miles. All the little niggles you inevitably end up with on a full restoration have been identified and sorted in that mileage so its ‘good to go’!
The vehicle was entered into the Non Standard Concours class at the TR Register international weekend at Lincoln showground 2018 where Patience came 2nd overall, she may have come first but the judges spotted road dirt on the underside!!! Must try harder next time ……
If you are the look out for a very well restored TR5 with nice upgrades to make the vehicle user friendly then this is your car!! We have probably missed out so much of the little subtle upgrades and modifications, you really need to view the car to appreciate the time, love, effort and indeed money that has gone into this restoration. To build a TR5 to this specification today, you would be looking around £70000, not including the purchase price of the original car!!
This TR5 will come with 12 months MOT, fully serviced by our sister company TR Enterprises, 12 months free membership to the TR Register and the piece of mind you are buying from a company that is passionate about classic cars.
