1979 VOLKSWAGEN "LATE BAY" WITH EARLY LOOKS
A stunningly presented “late bay” that has been backdated. Pictured here is the vehicle when it was freshly imported from California. The picture clearly shows that before the restoration began, the vehicle had been a true “survivor” having never seen a salted road. even down to the original paintwork it proved to be the perfect basis to begin a restoration.
The restoration of the vehicle began by being completely bare metaled and sealed before being resprayed into VW Pastel white (L90D) (4 coats) to ensure a lasting finish.
Once the re-spray had been completed it was time to set about the mechanicals. Firstly a professional conversion from LHD to RHD (this can easily be converted back by preference) and fitted with adjustable electronic power steering to enhance the overall driving experience.
The power is supplied by a freshly refurbished “type 4” 1800cc engine fitted with a weber carburetor and electronic ignition delivered through a freshly reconditioned gearbox and new torque converter to eliminate as much of the unknown as possible.
The brakes were then completely overhauled including brake discs, pads, drums, cylinders, pipes and flexy pipes before the fitment of brand new drive shafts and gaitors etc. A brand new split charge electric system has been fitted (leisure and cranking batteries) along with 240v plug in power. The fuse box has also been updated to provide dependable service.
As for the asthetics This vehicle has really been treated with thorough attention to detail. All components are of the highest of qualities including: tinted top windscreen, aluminium front and rear bumpers 17″ wheels ( originals available by request) stylish yet low energy lighting system, 3/4 “rock and roll” bed, high quality “VANWURKS” interior, freshly reconditioned seating throughout but a very well known classic vehicle upholsterer, all new window rubbers, trims etc.
This vehicle has been properly sorted and is advertised at just a fraction of the overall build cost – over £22,000 in parts only! With labour and the van itself the build cost escalates to over £50,000.
A great van with just 100 miles since the rebuild
